What is ‘Gurlish’?
‘Gurlish’ is exactly what it sounds like, something characteristic of a girl.
Historically, the word has been negatively attributed to weakness, meekness and vulnerability. We intend to redefine what it is to be girlish; it is powerful, loud and resilient.
Why is it needed?
In 2023, women comprised over 50% of the UK population, which constitutes a majority. Nevertheless, just over 40% of journalists are women, occupying only 24% of senior editorial roles.
An industry committed to the education of the public must be representative of those it serves.
Gurlish seeks to encourage journalism amongst women, allowing them to develop their abilities before joining the industry.
How can I contribute?
Gurlish publishes journalism written by women, meaning those who identify as such.
To contribute, keep an eye out for content calls advertised on our instagram – @gurlishmagazine. Available editorial positions will also be shown on our home page.
Our magazine operates online, a digital format, allowing free access for our readers. However, for those who wish, with a small fee, physical copies can be obtained.
